About the Production

Orpheus, a jaded legend with an axe to grind, reexamines love, devotion, and art by retelling the myths that shaped him. Through biting stories of gods and mortals, he confronts his own bitterness — and ultimately discovers that when we let go of ego, art becomes transcendent, and so do we.

A combined Theatre and Dance event featuring 3–6 actors and 20 dancers, The Metamorphoses Project will include live music performed by renowned oud and classical guitar player Amos Hoffman, accompanied by mandolin and percussion.

Initially inspired by the collaborative work of Kate Joyce and Andrew Berns: Metamorphoses (Special Problems Press, 2021).

Content Notes

This play contains profanity and references to sexual and physical assault.
All theatrical intimacy will be choreographed within actor boundaries and in collaboration with the cast, director, and intimacy director.

Casting Breakdown

All roles are open to actors of any race, gender, or identity.

Orpheus – A jaded legend with an axe to grind. Bitter, biting, witty, and charismatic.
Acting Ensemble – Up to five performers. The ensemble will shape the story through movement, heightened language, and contemporary text.

Theatre South Carolina embraces non-traditional casting and encourages the casting of ethnic minority actors, female actors, and physically-challenged actors where possible. Individual show directors, together with the artistic director and the acting faculty, make all casting decisions. While some parts may be cast before auditions, that is always the case with guest actors.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
