How USC changed my life: The University of South Carolina has had a transformative impact on my life in ways I never anticipated. From the moment I stepped onto campus, I felt a sense of belonging and purpose that I had not experienced before. USC has provided me with the academic challenges and resources I need to grow both personally and professionally. The rigorous curriculum has sharpened my critical thinking and deepened my understanding of the issues that matter most to me.
A favorite memory: One of my favorite memories is spending time with my advisors and supervisors Camea Cato and Sonya Singleton. These incredible women have been instrumental in shaping me into a more confident and capable individual. Their unwavering support, guidance, and encouragement have given me the tools to navigate both academic and personal challenges with a sense of purpose.
What I’ve learned about myself: The most important thing I’ve learned while at the College of Social Work is the significance of the Code of Ethics. Through my coursework and practicum experiences, I’ve gained a deep understanding of how essential ethical principles are in guiding social work practice. I’ve learned not only the importance of upholding these standards but also how to effectively apply them in real-world situations. In my practicum, I’ve had the opportunity to navigate complex challenges where ethical decision-making was crucial. These experiences have taught me how to balance the needs of clients, respect their rights, and ensure that I’m making decisions that align with the values of social justice, integrity, and accountability.
What helped me succeed: Camea Cato, the A-Z academic advisor, Sonya Singleton, the Assistant Dean for Students, and Rhonda Dinovo, the MSW Program Director, have each had a profound impact on my life. These incredible women have provided me with invaluable support, guidance, and mentorship throughout my academic journey. They have not only helped me navigate the challenges of graduate school but have also inspired me to grow both personally and professionally. Their commitment to my success has shaped me into a more confident and capable individual, and I am forever grateful for the positive influence they’ve had on my life.
What’s next: After graduation, my next step is to pursue a career as a medical social worker. I am eager to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to support patients and their families, helping them navigate the complexities of health care while advocating for their needs and well-being. This role aligns perfectly with my passion for making a tangible impact on people’s lives during some of their most challenging times.
